Khandu Wangchuk Bhutia: Keeping Sikkim’s Thangka Painting Heritage Alive 

Khandu Wangchuk Bhutia is a renowned Thangka artist from Sakyong, Sikkim, who has dedicated his life to preserving this ancient Buddhist art form. Inspired by his father, a respected monk, and artist at Pemayangtse Monastery, Khandu developed a deep passion for Thangka painting early on. 

Today, Khandu is celebrated for his stunning Thangka artworks and his role as a mentor. He has trained over 350 students in this traditional craft and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri. Through his artistry and teaching, Khandu keeps the rich tradition of Thangka painting vibrant and alive.

Early Life and Inspiration  

Born in 1959 in the picturesque village of Sakyong, Khandu Wangchuk Bhutia grew up in a family deeply immersed in Buddhist culture and art. His father, the late Jigmee Wangchuk Lama, was a highly respected monk and artist at Pemayangtse Monastery. The monastery, known for its rich artistic and spiritual heritage, was a constant source of inspiration for young Khandu. Surrounded by intricate Buddhist art from an early age, Khandu developed a profound appreciation for Thangka painting—a traditional form of Tibetan Buddhist art that combines spiritual teachings with exquisite craftsmanship.  

A Passion Ignited

Khandu’s early exposure to the artistry of his father and the spiritual ambiance of the Pemayangtse Monastery fueled his passion for Thangka painting. After completing his formal education, Khandu joined the Pemayangtse Monastery to immerse himself fully in the art form. Under the guidance of renowned Thangka artists and his father’s influence, he honed his skills and mastered the intricate techniques that define Thangka painting. These paintings are more than mere artwork; they are vital tools in Buddhist meditation, depicting deities and spiritual scenes that aid in the practitioner’s journey toward enlightenment.  

Mastering the Craft  

Khandu’s commitment to Thangka painting is clear through his outstanding contributions to the art. His work includes creating stunning Buddhist murals at prominent locations such as Pemayangtse Monastery, Ngadak Monastery, and Tashi Choeling Monastery. Each mural reflects not only his artistic prowess but also his deep understanding of the spiritual significance of Thangka art.  

In 1982, Khandu founded the Khanchenzodnga Handicrafts Centre in Namchi, South Sikkim. This center has become a crucial hub for preserving and promoting traditional Sikkimese crafts. At his center, Khandu has taught more than 350 students in different local crafts, such as Thangka painting, wood carving, and carpet weaving. His commitment to teaching ensures that the ancient craft of Thangka painting continues to thrive, passing from one generation to the next.  

Recognition and Awards  

Khandu’s contributions to the world of Thangka painting have not gone unnoticed. Throughout the years, he has earned numerous prestigious awards, such as the National Award for Handicrafts in 1981 and the Kala Nidhi award at the Surajkund Fair in Haryana in 2006. In 2022, Khandu was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the arts and his role in preserving a vital cultural heritage.
