The Remarkable Journey of Neelam Dutta: Championing Organic Farming in Northeast India

In the vibrant landscapes of Pabhoi, Assam, a quiet revolution in farming is taking root. Leading this change is Neelam Dutta, a forward-thinking farmer who has transformed his land at Pabhoi Greens into a hub of innovation and sustainability. Through his dedication to cultivating indigenous rice and a diverse range of vegetables, Neelam is reshaping agriculture in Northeast India.

A Farming Legacy Built by Neelam Dutta

Neelam’s journey in agriculture began at a young age when he took over the family farm after the untimely passing of his father, Dr. Hemen Dutta, in 2001. Dr. Dutta, a medical practitioner-turned-farmer, had established the Lakshmi Agriculture Multipurpose Project (LAMP) in 1978-79, laying the foundation for what would become Pabhoi Greens.

Neelam Transitioning to Organic Farming

Inspired by Rachel Carson’s book, “Silent Spring,” which highlighted the environmental harm caused by pesticides, the young Neelam made a pivotal decision to transition the farm to organic cultivation in 2003. This shift was driven by his desire to restore the natural ecosystem and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Innovations Under Neelam Dutta’s Leadership

Under Neelam’s leadership, Pabhoi Greens has evolved into a thriving, diversified farm. It now encompasses:

  • 34 ponds for fish farming,
  • A dairy operation, and
  • A nursery,

The farm also engages in bio-research activities, contributing to the advancement of efficient agricultural techniques.

Preserving Heirloom Seeds

One of Neelam’s most significant initiatives is his dedication to seed preservation. Recognizing the importance of locally adapted seeds, he has worked tirelessly to provide farmers in Northeast India with a diverse array of traditional and indigenous varieties, including aromatic paddy cultivars. This effort not only preserves traditional agricultural knowledge but also promotes climate-resilient farming.

Empowering the Community

Neelam’s commitment to sustainable agriculture extends beyond the farm’s boundaries. He has trained over 24,000 farmers in organic cultivation and seed preservation, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to adopt eco-friendly practices. The periodic free training camps organized at Pabhoi Greens serve as a hub for agricultural education and innovation.

Accolades and Recognition

Neelam’s tireless efforts have earned him widespread recognition, including the prestigious Haladhar Organic Farmer Award, the National Farmers Award (Krishak Samrat) from the Mahindra group, and the National Farmers Award (Harit Award). These accolades are a testament to his outstanding contributions to sustainable agriculture.

A Holistic Approach

Neelam’s vision extends beyond just farming; he also provides educational support to the children of the employees working at Pabhoi Greens, demonstrating a holistic approach to community welfare and development.

Neelam Dutta’s journey at Pabhoi Greens is a shining example of how one individual’s passion and dedication can transform the agricultural landscape. By championing organic farming, seed preservation, and community empowerment, he has become a symbol of hope for a more sustainable and eco-conscious future in Assam and beyond.
